Camp NaNoWriMo has a nifty feature that allows you to change your word count after you’ve declared it at the beginning of the month. However, you can change your word count only up until about 5 days before the event ends. After that, it’s pretty much set in stone, and if you don’t meet it, then you’ve “lost.” (Although there are no true losers with NaNoWriMo events.)
I’m kind of divided about my opinion of the changing word count feature, but this time, it helped. I changed my word count from 22, 748 to 16,500 because the story I was working on was essentially finished. If I had dragged it out any longer, I would have lost interest. The story had reached its natural ending at 16,500-something words, and there was no point in going on.
I could have started a new story to help me reach my original word count, but to be honest, I don’t have any new ideas right now. Well, I have a few, but none of them are strong or developed enough to last for ~6,000 words.
The next NaNoWriMo event is the big one… 50,000 words for November. Still debating on whether I want to do that… or sit out (for the first time since 2008). Hmm…
