I’m working on a 35,000-word novella entitled (I’ll probably change the title later) City Offline. So far, I’m sticking to the required amount of words per day (1,167). It doesn’t seem like a lot, but when you’re trying to get used to the storyline and trying to make it make sense, it’s quite a bit.
About 4,000 words into my work in progress, I began to get a little bored, but ever since I finally had the two main characters meet (I always wait too long to do that, not sure why), things have been going a bit more smoothly. I don’t think there’s that much romantic chemistry there yet, but hopefully these two characters will “click” by the end of the story. Tragically enough, they will never see each other again after the story is over, and that’s part of the conflict of the story. The other part of the conflict is that there is no Internet in town for a reason I don’t know yet — nobody can even get so much as a wireless signal. Last, the other part of the conflict is the two main characters are both stuck in their past. The events of the story mark a turning point in both of their lives: Virginia is moving into a town she doesn’t know anything about, and Andrew is finally putting that same town in his “history book” — or trying to, anyway.
Basically, the reason I’m writing this story is so I can work on describing settings. I need to flesh out this fictional town, since it is the town where all the other stories I’ve written (except XIII) take place. Am I successfully working toward my goal of describing settings? Not really. But I’m only five chapters in, so there’s time yet. And I’m outlining as I go, which is something I don’t usually do.
My current word count: 6,169/35,000
So how’s your Camp “experience” so far?
